Hydration Backpack with Drinking-Tube Positioning for UniTrack

The Hydration Backpack Drinking System with Drinking Tube Positioning is suitable for individuals who have limited head movement and adequate oral motor control to bite and suck, and those who lack the arm/hand strength or coordination to hold and lift a drink in the usual manner.

The Hydration Backpack with Drinking Tube Positioning for Slide-Track is intended for individuals who use newer model powered wheelchairs that have slotted mounting rails Mealtime Partners refers to as slide-srack. It specifically mounts to the unique rails on these types of wheelchairs. It is not appropriate for use on any other type of wheelchair. To facilitate access to the drinking tube and bite valve for those who have limited range of head movement, the drinking tube is contained within a flexible conduit, or, as we refer to it, a flex-tube. The flex-tube is attached to the Slide-Track rail by the Attachment Holder that is provided with this drinking system. The flex-tube can be shaped so that the drinking tube is positioned to meet the needs and desires of the user. Once the flex-tube is shaped, it will hold it's position until it is further adjusted. The drinking tube and bite valve can then be positioned such that the user can easily place their mouth on the bite valve with a small amount of head movement. (The bite valve restricts the liquid from flowing until pressure is applied to it by the user's lips or teeth.)

The Hydration Backpack with Drinking Tube Positioning for Slide-Track mounting should be installed on the slide-track that is on the back of the wheelchair near the headrest. It can be mounted to the left or right side of the user. The drinking system is shipped fully assembled. The Attachment Holder must then be mounted on the wheelchair. The Attachment Holder is installed using the hex key (wrench) that is provided. Once it is installed, the tool is unnecessary as the thumb screw on the Attachment Holder allows the drinking system components to be removed and reinstalled.

The hydration backpack with drinking tube positioning is suitable for individuals who have limited head movement and who have adequate oral control to bite and suck. It holds 70 oz. of liquid to provide long periods of access to hydration without refilling.

As shown above, the flex-tube, which contains the drinking tube, is inserted in the Attachment Holder that is mounted in the slot in the slide-track rail. The thumbscrew in the Attachment Holder holds the flex-tube securely, but can be easily loosened to remove and reinstall the drinking system components, as mentioned earlier. It can be mounted on the right or left, as shown above, to suit the user's preference.

For individuals with these limitations, this drinking system can allow them total independence from a caregiver for drinking for long periods of time. Thus, the user is freed from having to ask for a drink when they become thirsty, or have a dry mouth. They can take a drink whenever they wish, which, inevitably, will lead to better hydration.
